Team USA Wins 2022 Cairns Cup
Last week the premier Disability Matchplay Golf Event, the Cairns Cup, was played at the Shire London. Just as the Ryder Cup, this event puts Team USA versus Team Europe in a match play event every two years. After being postponed due to COVID-19, both teams were excited to return to the camaraderie of this fantastic event. Our very own National Director of Golf Operations, Jonathan, Snyder, is one of the captains of Team USA. Jonathan and the rest of team USA won the event and are brought the Cairns Cup aka “The Billy” home to the United States!! They look forward to defending the cup in two years on U.S. soil at The Fortress in Michigan.
About The Cairns Cup (from TheCairnsCup.com):
For those that don’t know The Cairns Cup aka “The Billy” came about from the Phoenix Cup 2018 in Florida when a team of disabled golfers from USA & Europe played at Rotonda Golf Club, Florida.
Mr. Billy Cairns was a team member of the traveling European team and unfortunately passed away the day after arriving in Florida. This made the competition very emotional and ensured that the camaraderie between the 2 teams was unprecedented.
The Cairns Cup CIC is now not for profit company that will allow the event to grow and promote opportunities for Disabled Golfers in the USA and Europe. There are 3 Europe based directors representing the stake holders, The Social Golfer, The Golf Trust and British Inclusive Golf. They are joined by 3 US based directors representing the United States stake holding organizations. After the 2022 event the 2024 team captains of Europe and the USA will be co-opted onto the board for the period leading up to their match.
Due to the COVID19 that’s affected the world in 2020/2021 the directors have deferred the event for a 2nd time to May 2022, the venue has also changed to the Seve Ballesteros designed The Shire London.
Therefore we now look towards our first ‘Cairns Cup’ event at The Shire London in May 2022, lovingly referred to as ‘The Billy’!
